Dar Lain is set in landscaped grounds, just outside the picturesque town of Tahanoute. From the outside it looks like a Moroccan citadel, its traditional pink-orange walls the color of local clay. There are extensive walled gardens planted with roses, palms and olive trees. A glorious L-shaped pool is fringed by manicured lawns and flowering shrubs.
On the inside, Dar Lain feels more like a luxury hotel than a citadel, decorated in the contemporary-Moroccan style that has its roots in Moorish design. Carved wooden doors set in grand Moorish arches lead into the main living space where brightly colored daybeds are scattered with red, pink and orange-striped cushions. The tiled mosaic floors are covered with Moroccan rugs. And everywhere there are decorative accessories straight from the souk: lanterns, floor-standing candleholders, intricate filigree metalwork, and even a witty framed collection of Moroccan slippers.
Upstairs the four bedrooms have elegant pencil post beds with jewel-colored cushions. Tadelakt bathrooms have contemporary fittings and fixtures.
The outside living space is equally spoiling, with a covered dining terrace and sofa areas in which to relax and enjoy a cup of mint tea, served from a traditional silver teapot. At night, the garden and terraces take on a whole new magic, lit by flickering lanterns and fragranced by roses.
From this perfect oasis you can make easy journeys into Marrakech or into the Atlas Mountains or head afield to Essaouira on Morocco's west coast or even southwest for an overnight trip to the Sahara Desert.
