Five Equity Estates Destinations for Excellent Snorkeling

Sunshine, soft sand, blue water, and snorkeling. What more could you ask for from a beach vacation? If you’re dreaming of an island getaway that includes underwater exploration, we’ve got five destinations we think you should consider.

Snorkeling Tips

To make the most of your snorkeling adventure, remember to use reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the delicate coral reefs, and always observe marine life from a respectful distance—never touch or chase turtles, rays, fish, or coral. While snorkel gear is available to rent at many popular beaches, bringing your own equipment ensures the best fit and comfort. If you’re exploring areas with rocky shoreline entries, a pair of water shoes can also make getting in and out of the water much easier.

ST. CROIX

Set within the clear, blue-green waters of the Caribbean, just southeast of Puerto Rico, the lovely island of St. Croix is a paradise of quiet, white-sand beaches, cozy historic neighborhoods, and acres of unspoiled natural beauty. At 84 square miles, it’s the largest of the US Virgin Islands, but also the least crowded.

Though St. Croix doesn’t see as many tourists as St. John or St. Thomas, it does attract about 100,000 visitors each year, drawn to the island’s warm, small-town vibe, rich, multi-cultural history, world-class diving spots, and abundance of fun-in-the-sun activities.

One of the most popular activities on St. Croix is snorkeling. The island is consistently ranked on many “best of” lists for its incredible dive sites, massive reef system, and abundance of colorful marine life.

Where to snorkel:

Snorkelers can choose from shallow, easy-access areas just off the beach or enjoy the thrill of deep-water reefs. Cane Bay, Davis Bay Beach, the “coral prairie” at Sand Castle, and the ancient reef garden at Buck Island National Monument are all excellent choices for both beginners and experienced snorkelers.

ANGUILLA

Home to some of the most stunning beaches in the world, with over a dozen smaller islands just a boat ride away, Anguilla is a true gem of the Caribbean — a luxurious paradise of soft, white sand, crystal clear water, and miles and miles of natural beauty.

Located in the northern part of the Lesser Antilles, about 10 miles from St. Martin, this quiet island is a British Overseas Territory renowned for its beaches, bays, food scene, and genuine warmth and hospitality.

Where to snorkel:

Two of Anguilla’s best marine parks and snorkel spots are Little Bay and Sandy Island.

Accessible only by boat, Little Bay is a small, secluded cove surrounded by tall cliffs of layered limestone. The soft-sand beach is protected and calm, leading into crystal-clear water that’s home to a variety of marine life.

Sandy Island is a tiny offshore cay with a lively outdoor beach bar, hammocks, beach chairs, and sugar-soft sand, surrounded by coral reefs teeming with marine life. Snorkel here for the opportunity to swim with parrotfish, angelfish, stingrays, and even sea turtles.

AMBERGRIS CAYE, BELIZE

The sunny island of Ambergris Caye, off the coast of Belize in Central America, is famous for its great weather, beautiful beaches, and incredible barrier reef system — the largest in the Northern Hemisphere — offering some of the best diving, snorkeling, and fishing in the world.

Though not a large island (at just 25 miles long), it is Belize’s most popular tourist destination, with guests coming from around the world to experience its idyllic blend of laid-back beach lifestyle, outdoor adventuring on land and water, and upscale, modern amenities.

Home to lush mangrove lagoons, Mayan archaeological sites, and underwater parks, as well as the galleries, shops, and restaurants of the friendly main town of San Pedro, there’s plenty to see and do on Ambergris Caye—all set against a backdrop of stunning turquoise water and dramatic natural vistas, just a short flight or scenic ferry ride from the mainland.

Where to snorkel:

Boat out to the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve at the Belize Barrier Reef, snorkel alongside the amazing fish and marine life at the Hol Chan Marine Reserve, or enjoy direct beach access to the barrier reef at Tranquility Bay.

But for an unforgettable snorkel experience, plan a half-day excursion to the famed Great Blue Hole, a large underwater limestone sinkhole formed during the last ice age. Though divers have the bigger thrill there, snorkelers can explore the reefs around the hole, teeming with color and a diverse variety of fish and other marine life.

ST. JOHN

Home to Virgin Islands National Park, which protects nearly two-thirds of the island, St. John is widely considered one of the Caribbean’s premier snorkeling destinations. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters, vibrant coral reefs, and secluded white-sand beaches create an unforgettable underwater experience. While it’s the smallest of the three main U.S. Virgin Islands, St. John is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, abundant marine life, and laid-back island atmosphere.

Snorkeling is one of the island’s most popular activities, with calm, protected bays offering exceptional visibility and easy access to colorful reefs teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, rays, and coral formations.

Where to snorkel:

St. John offers excellent snorkeling for every skill level. Trunk Bay is famous for its underwater snorkeling trail and calm conditions, while Maho Bay is one of the best places in the Caribbean to spot sea turtles grazing in the seagrass. Waterlemon Cay rewards snorkelers with vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life, and Salt Pond Bay offers a quieter experience with crystal-clear water and healthy reef systems just offshore.

MAUI

Nicknamed “The Valley Isle” because of its unique geography and lush, tropical forests, Maui is the crown jewel of the Hawaiian Islands. Renowned for its world-famous beaches, incredible cuisine, and abundance of outdoor attractions set against a backdrop of blue skies and beautiful landscapes, it’s a Pacific paradise that has long attracted nature lovers, foodies, families, and anyone seeking a little beachside rest and relaxation.

Where to snorkel:

Rated one of the best beaches on Maui and one of the top beaches in the world, Wailea Beach is a perfect spot to kick off a Hawaiian island snorkel vacation.

Some of the best snorkeling can be found just off-shore there along the lava rock formations at both ends of the beach. The reefs and rocky outcroppings at the southern end, in particular, are a must-do. The clear water makes for great viewing of the local marine life, and depending on the time of year, you may see butterfly fish, puffers, parrotfish, sea cucumbers, and even a few turtles during your swim.

For an unbeatable day beneath the water, plan a trip to the famed Molokini Crater. Located just off the south coast of the island, this protected volcanic atoll is home to an abundance of marine life, including Hawaiian green sea turtles, over 250 species of fish, eels, manta rays, and more. Snorkelers will find visibility of up to 150 feet and water within the crater that’s calmer and more protected from swells and currents.

Three-hour, family-friendly snorkel tours for all levels are available. These half-day trips take you by boat onto the crystal-clear waters around the crater as well as to several other premier snorkeling spots around the island for an up-close look at Maui’s colorful coral reefs and marine life.
