Five Sights to See in Tuscany

Home to medieval hilltop towns, coastal villages, world-class wineries tucked into lush vineyards, and, of course, the shining city of Florence, Tuscany is an unbelievably beautiful vacation destination.

With incredible food, cultural and historic attractions, and picture-perfect landscapes, it’s easy to see why the region is a favorite among adventure seekers and luxury travelers.

Whether you’re planning your first trip to Tuscany or making a return visit, we think the following five sights would make great additions to your itinerary.

Boboli Gardens (Giardino di Boboli) in Florence — This masterpiece of landscaping and design, located behind the Palazzo Pitti, is one of Florence’s great open-air, living museums. It features over 200 statues, famed fountains, flowering gardens and fruit trees, a stunning, tree-lined avenue, and plenty of hidden areas to sit and rest.

The Piazza del Campo in Siena — This beautiful main square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is universally known as the symbol of Siena. Shell-shaped and featuring impressive medieval architecture, it’s the perfect place to wander and explore or sit and enjoy an al fresco lunch, espresso, or gelato while taking in the sights and sounds.

The Crystal Museum in Colle di Val d’Elsa — The only one of its kind in Italy, this unique museum takes guests on an immersive, two-level tour through the history of the region’s famed glassworks industry. You’ll find historic and beautifully crafted crystal items from as far back as the 1800s alongside more contemporary (and famous) crystal pieces, all displayed in an elegant (and recently renovated) space.

San Gimignano — Located in the province of Siena, the city center of this small, walled hill town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, best known for its unique medieval tower houses. A dozen or so of the preserved structures rise above the town’s plazas and other buildings to create a stunning skyline. Romanesque and Gothic architecture abounds within the walls, and many of the historic churches and secular buildings also contain frescos and other preserved details dating back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

The hilltop town of Volterra — Roman ruins, dramatic medieval architecture, and ancient city walls are just some of the key attractions in Volterra. The town, with a hilltop vantage point that offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, boasts one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheaters in Italy, as well as significant Etruscan historic sites, small museums, and a sprawling, grassy park that invites locals and visitors to sit, picnic, and enjoy the sunshine.

Two Extra Adventures

For even more adventures (and sights to see) in Tuscany, consider exploring the lovely coastal villages of Porto Ercole (with historic Spanish fortresses, a bustling marina, and a lovely botanical garden) or Talamone (with small beaches, the Orbetello Lagoon Aquarium, and a fourth-century preserved, hilltop Etruscan temple).
